Depends on the book.  Bodice Rippers are designed to be read in the
bathtub and so get wet and worn and dog-eared.  Paper back fantasy (with
the exception of Tolkein) can be similarly abused.  Good Science Fiction
must be treated with respect in all forms (but lets face it, paperbacks
are designed to be thrown into purses or backpacks and will recieve a
lot of abuse)

Good reference material must be cherished and preserved.

The OED may only be perused with white gloves on.

It all depends on what you're reading!
