importance of escorts???

Greetings to all,

The issue of escorts is quite perplexing to me, a product of women's lib
and the 20th century.

I usually attend events as a merchant along with my darling husband.  We
don't wish to leave our shelves unattended for too long. When I go to visit
other areas, I am 'unescorted'.

How much of a faux pas is that?
What is wrong with walking alone?

I can understand the need for companions after dark...then as now.  But
during the day?  At crowded events?

What gives?

Please, please enlighten me. Surrounded by books, I find no answers.
