Guy Fawkes Day began as an anti-Catholic celebration.  Guy Fawkes and
some conspirators tried to blow up Parliament when King James I was in
the building (er, 1604??), but some conspirators ratted on the plan, and
Guy got caught.  Supposedly showed the inherently treasonous nature of
English Catholics in general.  Anyway, kids nowadays wander the streets
for days leading up to the 11th, pestering passersby with requests for
"a penny for Guy".
