Astrolabe Reference

Greetings to all.......

For those gentles with an interest in astrolabes and other such historic
scientific instruments, the Adler Planetarium has finally issued the first
volume cataloging its extensive collection (amongst the top four collections
in the world - some 1600 artifacts).

This volume, Western Astrolabes, includes photographs and detailed
descriptions of 45 astrolabes, maritime astrolabes, and quadrants. There are
also chapters on their history and use, with examples in woodcuts,
illuminations, and paintings.

The cost of this reference is $45, plus $5 shipping.

A second volume on astrolabes is coming, Future volumes will be on sundials
and timekeeping devices, surveying and navigation instruments, and globes,
telescopes, orreries, and other such devices.
