Actually, Sir Corby's aketon is just layers of canvas, sewn into tubes
and then stuffed like crazy with *cotton* batting. The rigidity is all
a by-product of the stuffing. Gamboised cuisses can be made in the same
fashion and then all you need are joint-coverings (knee & elbow cops), a
helm and you're mostly there!

I second Cunian's comments about getting stuff from other fighters. I'm
on my third (?) helm, my third or fourth set of body armor, etc. and I'm
not exactly a gung-ho fighter (much to my knight's dismay! <grin>).
You may find a wealth of information and offers in your local group.

One caveat, though. As soon as possible, find stuff that fits you as
well as can be managed. There's very little that's more depressing and
generally miserable than trying to get any good at fighting in stuff
that impedes your progress because it's too
large/small/tight/loose/long/short.
