I had a lovely time at Estrella. I went out to solicit manuscripts for the
Compleat Anachronist, and found myself treated like a Queen. I can't speak
highly enough of the hospitality of the Barony of Sundragon. My hosts were
kind enough to loan me a splendid cabin tent, provide extra bedding, ensure
access to a wonderful food plan, and introduce me to scads of folks. They
even gave me a table right at registration for the A&S Collegium, so I
would have the best opportunity to pigeonhole volunteers for the CA.

One of my favorite aspects of the event was the school group tours. During
the weekdays, elementary school classes from all over the region made field
trips to the site. They saw fighting, A&S activities, and lots more. Some
of the kids really got into it--I saw one class in which all the children
were wearing garb.

And the showers! They were the most fabulous showers I have ever seen at a
camping event! A tractor-trailer featuring 16 clean, private stalls!
Plenty of lovely hot water, great water pressure. The anterooms even had
blowers--warm air when it's cold, and cool when it's warm. I learned that
the company that owns the trailers has a contract with the Federal
Government to provide showers for rangers and other firefighting personnel
during the summer. While I'm a little sad the trailers aren't available
for Pennsic, I can't think of a finer alternative use.

The weather was pretty much what I'd expected. Hot during the day, cold at
night. We are talking Arizona in the spring, after all. And the dust was
horrendous, but the site *IS* an alfalfa field, so I'd anticipated it.
Many other gentles, though, were not so fortunate. The chirurgeons saw
more than their share of respiratory problems. On Saturday night, at least
one person was taken off-site in a helicopter, and an estimated 15 were
carted away in ambulances. If you asked me, I'd have to say the
chirurgeons and supporting paramedics were the real heroes of the War.
