It doesn't just happen to you!  I've wondered about this phenomenon 
myself when I politely open the door for the one other person near my 
office building, then stand there while they make it to the other end of 
the lobby and onto an elevator and I'm still tending the door!

and no, SCA ladies do not stand around waiting, unable to get on with 
life for lack of a gentleman to open the door for her.
