Well, of course, we don't know.  Royal chroniclers and biographers tended to
be real quiet about that sort of thing. :)  But that has certainly always
been the rumour, even in the fourteenth century.  It is true that Edw. II had
a number of male favourites, but no known (or suspected) mistresses.  Some
have also drawn conclusions from the method by which he was murdered (red hot
poker inserted .... ) as being appropriate to his reputation as a sodomite,
if not an outright conviction.  However, this particular technique has the
advantage of killing the victim without leaving marks on the body or
bloodstains on the floor.  The royal funeral could be held with all due
ceremony, and the deceased would look fine.
