Sad Song
I would like to sing a sad song about a fighter who bought,
at the very beginning of his career, a magical suit of armor,
made from the hide of the Unicorn (which Herr Albrecht Duerer
has so cunningly shown us), which was totally impenetrable
_except_ to a lance made of the _horn_ of the Unicorn. I begin.
My mama done told me,
When I got this armor,
My mama done told me, "Son,
A fight is a sweet thing
When your side is winning,
But not all battles are won.
The day will come you face
That getting run through
Is sure to produce
The blues in a night."
I, imperilled,
Dying,
Hear the herald
Crying,
"Oyez!
He whose armor rattles
Finally lost a battle.
Oyez!"
And "oyez" to "oyez"
The clickety-clack
Was echoing back
The blues of a knight.
I have been curs'd.
This is the worst
Fate than a man can ever meet,
When he cannot deal with defeat.
Had I lost fights
Before I might
Have learn'd to take my death in stride,
But I have never died,
So I'm beat!
From Natchez to Mobile,
From Memphis to St. Joe,
Wherever be cataphracts,
I've fought in some big wars,
And won every combat,
But know I must face the facts:
I'm not a good loser,
And now that I've lost
I must pay the cost:
The blues of a knight.
My mama was right;
There's blues in the knight.
I think it still needs some work with the place names.
Does anyone here have any ideas?
