INFO:REQ: check fraud

Greetings kind gentles,

I know that this is off merry rose topics but I need some data 
to help my lady

someone (probably roomie or roommate's boyfriend) took one of her checks 
and a deposit slip and cashed a check for four hundred dollars

the bank is saying that there is a *chance* that she can get her money back

I was wondering what her rights are
or the best way to proceed with this
please respond personally to take this out of the merry rose
