  Actually, they did have e-mail back then, but the 'e' stood for elk.  
You'd just hang your scroll from a string around his neck and send him 
off.  Or if you had a bunch of them, you put them into a bag (often 
refered to as a packet).  And if they didn't sign the scroll....um, 
no I don't seem to have any documentation with me.  Why do you ask? :)
