Re: Escorting Ladies (long)
Poster: Scott Silvers/James of Westmorland <ssilvers@liberty.uc.wlu.edu>
First, good response.
Second, I have heard of people being chewed out for not escorting
ladies when they've been given orders to. This all too often comes from
knights ordering their squires. Yes, it is nice to offer the lady an escort.
However, to force an escort on her says, "Oh, you're too weak and frail to
take care of yourself. Let me do it." I know a number of ladies in the
SCA, Duchess Lorna of Leeds to name one in particular, who are in no need
of an escort if they don't want one. These women are strong individuals
who don't need their hands held. As far as court goes, as I've said
before, you can offer to escort someone in, but to force yourself as an
escort does not make you courteous or chivalrous, it makes you a
presumptuous buffoon.
