One minor correction. I beleive Corun meant Stirling, not Stamford. As
long as we are on the subject of battles, what ever happened to
Bannockburn?! I can forgive the kilts, because little is really known
about early 14th century Scottish dress. We just know that kilts were in
some early stage of evelution towards the 16th century form recognized as
a great kilt. I can forgive the woad, because, hey! we know those actor
types like make-up :)
But why mess up a good battle!? In the film, Robert the Bruce was
supposedly going to pay homage to Edward, but decided instead to quote
Robert Burns (?!?) and charge into battle. In reality, a DIFFERENT Robert
the Bruce fought Bannockburn against an English force led by Edward II.
It was fought over Stirling Castle, the last English stronghold north of
the border. The Scots had it under seige. If the English could break
through the seige and releive their men in the castle, they could use
Stirling as a starting point for further invasion. If the Scots could
keep this from happening, all English strongholds in the north would be
lost. This battle was pre-planned, and both sides spent a year preparing
for it. Nothing at all like what was in the movie, although this single
battle could easily be turned into a great film in itself.

Eogan
