The Chinese used only the war drums...as far as I can remember, they didn't cry out to start a battle, but beat a drum, waited for a response, and answered back...kind of like, "We're here, you ready to fight?"
(wait) "Yes, we're ready when you are!" (wait) "Okay!  Let's start!"  (march some distance and start fighting).
IF my memory serves corectly, but I could be wrong, as normal.
