reversable garb

Poster: EoganOg@aol.com

I just thought of an example that is a bit out of period but may (I think)
shed some light on what reversable clothing (if they had it) may have been
used for in the past:
In Scotland, after the mid-17th century when the feilidh-beag was replacing
the feilidh-mhor (the little kilt rather than the belted plaid), but prior to
the late 19th century when the kilt became a more formal thing with straps and
buckles and the like, men would wear their kilts with the right apron
overlapping the left whenever they were doing any kind of work. For more
relaxed or formal occasions they would overlap the left apron over the right.
Thus the left apron stayed clean even when working, and the garment did not
have to be cleaned or replaced when you wanted to look nicer.
