I'm still catching up on e-mail, so apologies if this is behind the
times.

Why not Wallace Shawn as Gollum?  He's short, he's gnomelike, he's
smart, and he's INCREDIBLY obnoxious?  Of course, if you want to
emphasize Gollum's tragic aspect, perhaps he a bit too unlikeable.
