RE: On the Relevance of Lord of the Rings to the Society
Poster: Dominica Harlan <DHarlan@RodgersBuilders.com>
Milady, I have a great respect for Tolkien, among many other fantasy and
sci-fi writers, and many of the actors and filmworks discussed over the
*vast* body of messages on the LOtR movie. However, like many people the
only email account to which I have access is at work and I have only so
many hours in a day in which to read it without getting fired. Lots of
traffic is great, and shared interests are wonderful among a group so large
and diverse. However, this thread has gone overlong and many people have
unnecessarily added to the numbers of messages w/ simple agreements or
questions that could have been better handled in private. Also, yes, I
prefer the traffic on this list to be more directly-linked to the SCA and
not to a movie on a book of some importance to the Society. As I said
before, those of you going wild over this topic could continue it in
private w/o excluding any of the interested, but without involving the
list. **PLEASE** either move this to a private realm or at least abbreviate
the amount of traffic on this topic.
thank you,
Ceara
While I grant you that that thread may have grown a bit too enthusiastic
for some of us, those who feel that Tolkien, specifically in the Lord of
the Rings volumes, err greatly.
The Tolkienic corpus played a large part in the development of the Society
in its earlier years and still has a major effect on its ethos. Anyone who
doubts that need only take a look at the ceremonies and fealty oaths of the
more westerly kingdoms.
