I hadn't heard that one, but the true part of it is that there was a
scheduled fighter practice (this was some years ago) of the incipient
shire on the carrier. A russian sub spotted it, but when the sub
commander tried to report it to his superiors, they accused him of
drinking on duty. My ex- husband was Army Signal Corps and working at a
listening post when it came through. Being as how he and one of his
co-workers were both SCA, they thought it was hilarious. The tale has
been modified and embroidered upon over the years, but it is based on a
true story.
