Re: Courtly behavior

Mundanely, I'm one of those tough broads.... the ones who believe "I can
stand on my own two feet and handle myself in virtually any situation". I
work in a tech field, but am still one of very few females in most
professional situations.
While I DO believe I'm a tough cookie and able to provide for myself both
professionally and personally.... where is it writ that being
self-sufficient equalled being rude?
I ALWAYS try to say "Thank you" and smile if someone (doesn't matter what
gender) holds a door for me or does one of those other polite gestures that
help make society a bit more cordial to function in.
And the sad part is, probably better than 80% of the time, if said gesture
is being made by a man--when I thank him.....he lights up like a Yule tree
and gives me a huge smile in return. So verily, I say unto you: where is
it writ that being capable or self-sufficient means you cannot let another
civilized human extend a social courtesy? Acknowledge it pleasantly and
you'll *both* be touched by the warmth of it.....

So, I will say to all: Ladies, be free to graciously accept help and
assistance if you need it, and thank the gentleman for his trouble.
Gentleman, don't be afraid to offer assistance, even if you are rebuffed
on occasion, for there are many who will welcome your help!
