Bruce vs. Balliol

    After the death of Margaret, Queen of Scotland, Maid of Norway, the
succession to Scotland's throne lay wide open.  Two of the claimants to
vie for the powerful position of the King of Scotland were,  Robert the
Competitor and John Balliol.  Wasn't their a strong division between the
Scots as to whom they supported, whether it be The Competitor or
Balliol?  It seems logical that there would be a strong division, and it
would escalate after Eleanor's death, and Edward I's inherent cruel
streak is freed.  Thank you very much in advance.
