There are also documentable reasons for women in period to dress as men. I
ran across an entertaining eye-witness account of ladies numbered "among
the fairest of the land, but not of the best quality" who shocked the
populace by wearing men's clothing to English tournaments in 1348.
Ever since, I've had great fun running about at pas d'armes in one of my
lord's cotehardies offering to show my "dagger" to noble ladies.
