I think, perhaps, that some of us may be partly at fault. I have
certainly received offers of help, but often out of a misguided
mundane sense of safety, will politely refuse if I am capable of
carrying my load with relative grace. (I can but rarely claim true
grace--just ask any of my dance partners!) If a gentleman hears, "No,
thank you, milord --I believe I can manage," enough, it may discourage
him from asking at all. In their defense, also, I must say that any
time I have asked for help, I have received it, contrary to the
suggestion of an earlier post on the subject.
