Nor is this precedence a bad thing.  There are many proverbs about its
wisdom, eg:

"Don't worry about the splinter in your neighbor's eye until you have
taken care of the tree in your own eye."

"If you are traveling with a child, first secure the oxygen mask to
your own face, then attend to the child's oxygen mask."

"Physician, heal thyself."
